Moving Image

GromiaDNA is - in this first iteration - a silent film that will be used as a stage set for Rupert Summerson's shakuhachi performance of a musical composition by the same name. The piece is a collaborative effort; it incorporates an interpretation - in both visual imagery and musical notation - of the DNA sequence of Gromia, an ancient unicellular aquatic organism abundant in Antarctic waters.

This piece includes contributions from Christina Bryer (porcelain artist, South Africa), Kate Alterio (artist & hand dancer, New Zealand), Sam Bowser (diver & polar biologist, USA), Shawn Harper and Henry Kaiser (divers & underwater photographers, US), Rupert Summerson (geologist & musician, Australia), Andrea Habura (biologist, USA) and Claire Beynon (artist, producer, director, boat builder and narrator, New Zealand).
